This article outlines the study protocol for a pilot cluster randomized controlled feasibility trial called SCAPE-U, conducted in Uganda. The trial aims to assess whether involving People With Lived Experience of Psychosis (PWLP) in mental health care delivery is feasible, acceptable, and safe within primary healthcare settings. In the trial, 36 health facilities are randomized to either standard training by mental health specialists (control) or a collaborative model where PWLP help co-facilitate training for primary care workers and provide home-based psychosocial support (intervention). Primary outcomes focus on feasibility and acceptability of the collaborative care model, with additional data on implementation processes and participant outcomes to inform a future full-scale trial.

This study analyzed routine health records from primary care facilities in Uganda, specifically in Kampala and Wakiso District. It found that mental, neurological, and substance use (MNS) disorders accounted for less than 2% of recorded diagnoses, with epilepsy being the most commonly documented condition. The findings highlight significant under-detection of mental health conditions at primary care level and the need for improved training and system support.

This paper reports on qualitative findings of the project Curtailing Hospital Readmissions for Patients with Severe Mental Illness in Africa (CHaRISMA), which explored how to refine the YBH intervention. The project was funded by a UK Joint Global Health Trials (JGHT) Development Grant. Data was collected through structured interviews with service users and caregivers, reflective practice by the YBH implementing team and a stakeholder focus group. A summary of refinements to the YBH intervention follows the TIDieR format (Template for Intervention Description and Replication).

This study explored the care experiences of family members of PLSMI with patients at the national mental hospital in Kampala, Uganda, a low income country. This study was undertaken to inform the development of YouBelongHome (YBH), a community mental health intervention implemented by YouBelong Uganda (YBU), a registered NGO in Uganda.

This paper overviews an intervention protocol developed by YBU, which is a combined model of parallel engagement with the national mental hospital in Kampala, Uganda, movement of ‘ready for discharge’ patients back to their families and communities, and community development.
