YouBelong Appoints Chief Psychiatrist for YouBelong-Uganda

— YouBelong-Uganda welcomes Dr Byamah Brian Mutamba as its chief psychiatrist—

Monsignor David Cappo, Chief Executive of YouBelong-Uganda said that he is delighted that Dr Mutamba, the co-founder of YouBelong-Uganda. has agreed to accept this important role. Monsignor Cappo said that ‘he is a distinguished Ugandan with a passion for the development of a public health approach in low resourced settings, like Uganda, to address the growing burden of mental health problems’.

Dr Byamah Brian Mutamba, married, with two children, has served for the last 10 years as a psychiatrist at Butabika Mental Hospital in Kampala. His first-hand experience of working with high numbers of acutely ill patients in a resource poor setting, has led him to be convinced that many of these people could be properly managed within their own homes, and with their families, or with engagement with nearby primary health care facilities, if support was available and local facility staff had training in mental health.

Dr Mutamba, a public health specialist, brings to YouBelong-Uganda deep insights into the development of innovations in a low-income country, in order to transition people out of institutions and back to family and community, and then to make sure people do not relapse and return to institutional care. He said recently, ‘We are going to put resources into strengthening families, providing them with the opportunities to generate income, and to train local health personnel in the community to be access points in order to support and maintain people in recovery, in the community.’

Dr Mutamba, sees psychiatric clinical work, as only part of the plan to help people recover from mental illness. He said ‘Family, local community, and culture all play vital parts in the recovery process, and must be given more emphasis in a person’s recovery plan.
