Key strategies to build mental health care in low income countries

April 14, 2022

Our key strategy in building mental health care and support in a low income country such as Uganda, is to mobilise families as active agents of mental health care.  We continually refine our pathway to mental health care, so that it is sustainable, has a wide impact, and can be produced to scale.

Supporting, empowering, guiding, nurturing, the main carer in families, nearly always women (wives, mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and sometimes even older children), is a crucial part of our strategy.

”For a woman like me who is caring for a child not born to the family I am married to, the programme helped me a lot. My husband understood the illness and it takes away the myths and bias that it was out of my witchcraft like other people allege, which was affecting my marriage”
